Foyle out of cup with battling performance!
By Doc.

Auchenfoyle started season 2010/11 with a hard fought defeat away to 1st Division team Westwood BB in East Kilbride.

Despite the final score of 5-2, Foyle's performance gave them plenty of optimisim for the new season ahead in the 2nd Division as they battled the entire game and refused to give up despite being up against quality, more experienced opposition.

Foyle lost the first goal of the game after a great move by Westwood resulted in a header being scored past the new Foyle keeper Gary Morgan.  This didnt stop Foyle who then went back up the park and scored a tremendous goal by striker Daniel Clark on the half volley over the keepers head from about 20 yards out.

Greenwood then took the lead again after a neat exchange through the middle resulted in them running through the middle of the Foyle defence and shooting past the helpless Morgan.  Yet again Foyle showed great fighting qualities to equalise for the 2nd time when David Ferrie played a lovely ball accross the penaly box for midfielder Danny Kimmons to make a great run and blast the ball into the net.  Foyle played out the remainder of the half clearly on top and had numerous chances to score whilst forcing their first division opponents deep into their own half.  At half time it would have been difficult to notice who was in the 1st Division and who had just been promoted from the 3rd, but in the 2nd half Westwood eventually showed their class and scored 3 times to progress into the next round.

Foyle will be dissapointed at losing the three 2nd half goals to set pieces but they still created plenty of chances and Ferrie and Clark created numerous chances up front and caused them no end of problems.

Although its not the best start to the season, it was a very difficult draw to play against Westwood who are one of the better 1st Division teams and current cup holders, so Foyle can be very pleased and proud of the way they continued to fight back right up to the end.  Foyle had a few players missing through injury or private matters and when these players are back then they will add to what is turning out to be a great squad with a great spirit and a real chance of doing very well in the 2nd Division this season.

Congratulations to Gary Morgan (GK) and David Smith (MID) in making their competitive debut for Foyle, both done very well, and along with big Paolo Martone, will prove to be excellent signings.  Thanks to James Buchanan for coming along again to support the team from the sidelines whilst recovering from his broken hand.  Also, good luck to John Stanton who has decided to leave Foyle and find a new club for the forthcoming season.  He leaves with the best wishes of all the boys and thanks for the contribution and many goals he has scored over the last few years.

The new adventure really starts next week with our opening league game away to our old 3rd Division friends, Dumbarton.  Lets work on our fitness, stay clear of injury and start the league campaign with the first of many wins.

Mon eh Foyle!!!
